Journey to Annapurna Sanctuary

Our Annapurna Sanctuary Trek begins in chaotic yet beautiful Kathmandu. From the moment you arrive in Kathmandu, you’ll feel the excitement of the adventure that lies ahead. Flying to the serene city of Pokhara, officially initiate your trekking journey to the Annapurna region. From Pokhara, you drive to Hile, from where you will begin your trek to Ulleri, where you can observe terraced fields and traditional villages, replacing the cemented houses and compactness of the city.

The climb to Ghorepani on the third day is rewarded with stunning vistas that will take your breath away. Ghorepani, a Gurung hub, is a pretty popular traditional village that adorns unique stone slab houses that serve as teahouses. Early the next morning, a pre-dawn hike to Poon Hill presents one of the most iconic views in the Himalayas—a golden sunrise illuminating the snow-capped peaks of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Machhapuchhre, and Annapurna range. From there, the trail leads to Tadapani, where you are enveloped by the tranquility of rhododendron forests.

As you trek from Tadapani to Sinuwa, the air grows cooler and the towering peaks draw nearer, signaling your approach to the sanctuary. The journey to Deurali the following day is marked by awe-inspiring landscapes as the path winds through deep gorges and lush bamboo forests. With every step, you are drawn deeper into the mystical world of the Annapurna’s.

Arriving at Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) is a moment of pure exhilaration. This trek section is pretty challenging because of its steep ascends and descends, but nothing too strenuous. Also, giant cascading waterfalls on the way add more bliss to the journey.

Once you arrive at ABC bypassing Machhapuchhre Base Camp, you notice a change in landscape. Surrounded by incredible natural beauty, you find yourself facing the giant Annapurna massif. Besides the gigantic mountains, you will also see vast glaciers just on the side of the base camp. The descent begins the next day, retracing your steps to Bamboo, where the memories of the sanctuary linger in your mind.

The final leg of the trek takes you to Jhinu Dada, where you can soak in natural hot springs, soothing your tired muscles and reflecting on the journey. A scenic drive brings you back to Pokhara, where the tranquility of Phewa Lake offers a perfect end to your trek. Returning to Kathmandu the next day, you are once again reacquainted with the chaos of the city.

The journey for sure is not the easiest one, but it is not the most difficult as well. Despite the challenges it holds, it surely promises experiences that shall last lifelong and leave you wanting more. So, when you are preparing to depart, we shall bid you farewell in hopes of seeing you again for another incredible adventure.

You will be welcomed by one of our team representatives at the airport. They will escort you to your designated hotel, where they will help you with the check-in procedure. After check-in, you may spend your remaining day at your convenience.

After an early breakfast, a short scenic flight takes you to Pokhara, a city nestled beside the tranquil Phewa Lake and surrounded by the stunning Annapurna range. From Pokhara, you will drive to Hile, the starting point of your trek. The trail begins with a gentle ascent through terraced fields and traditional villages, offering the first glimpses of the majestic peaks that will accompany you throughout the trek. As you continue trekking, the path gradually steepens until you reach the village of Ulleri, which is the final destination for the day.

Today’s trek takes you from Ulleri to the charming village of Ghorepani. The trail ascends through dense rhododendron forests, which burst into vibrant colors during the spring season. As you climb higher, the views of the surrounding mountains become increasingly spectacular. Upon reaching Ghorepani, you will be rewarded with breathtaking vistas and the unique culture of the Gurung ethnic community. The village itself is architecturally pleasing, with its traditional stone houses and warm hospitality, making it a memorable stop on your journey.

Wake up early to hike Poon Hill, one of the famous viewpoints in the Annapurna region. The effort is well worth it, as you witness a spectacular sunrise over the Himalayas, with the peaks of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Machapuchare (Fishtail) bathed in golden light. Following that, after viewing the panorama, you head back to Ghorepani for breakfast, from where you will continue your trek towards Tadapani. This path goes along with the rich forests, and sometimes the trail opens up for the magnificent towering views of the mountains, making a serene and enchanting atmosphere.

The trek from Tadapani to Sinuwa is a day filled with diverse landscapes and stunning views. Starting with a descent through a dense rhododendron forest, you cross the Kyumrung Khola River before ascending to the village of Gurung. From there, the trail leads through lush forests and terraced farmlands to Talung, offering glimpses of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre peaks along the way. Continuing upwards from Jhinu Danda, you reach the scenic village of Chhomrong, known for its panoramic mountain views. A steep descent to the Chhomrong Khola River is followed by a challenging ascent through forested terrain, bringing you to the peaceful ridgetop village of Sinuwa, where the day’s trek concludes with breathtaking valleys and mountain vistas.

Leaving Sinuwa behind, you’ll trek towards Deurali, a journey that brings you deeper into the heart of the Himalayas. It is a long journey ahead of us with a lot of ascends and descends through steep trails and incredible vegetation. Leaving Sinuwa, you take the forested path before descending a stiff path to Bamboo. From Bamboo, we The journey takes you through dense bamboo forests and along steep ridges, with the Modi Khola River roaring below. As you ascend, the vegetation becomes sparser and the landscape more rugged, with towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls creating a dramatic backdrop. You will become more aware of your altitude as you arrive in Deurali and make yourself comfortable.

Another long day ahead of us. However, it is the highlight of your trek, as you will reach the Annapurna Base Camp. After leaving Deurali, the trail goes along Modi Riverside before reaching a vast pastureland towered by giant hills. You will see hundreds of mountaain goats and sheep grazing across this pastureland. Walking past pastureland, you climb a giant hill before reaching Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC). The hike from MBC continues through alpine meadows and glacial moraines, with the peaks of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machapuchare dominating the skyline. As you approach ABC, the landscape opens up into a natural amphitheater, surrounded by some of the highest mountains in the world.

Wake up to an amazing sunrise over the glorious Annapurna massif. Admire the glistening vistas of Annapurna South, Annapurna I, II, Machhapuchhre, Tharpu-Chuli, and more before getting ready to descend back to Bamboo. As you descend, you will notice the amazing vistas becoming distant, but the tranquil setting of the surroundings will keep you mesmerized. Bamboo, nestled amidst dense forests, offers a peaceful ambiance for you to rest.

Today's trek leads you from Bamboo to Jhinu Dada, a village renowned for its natural hot springs. The journey begins with a steep ascent before following a forested path to upper Sinuwa. From there, the trail descends to lower Sinuwa and continues to the picturesque village of Chhomrong. After a final descent from Chhomrong to Jhinu Dada, a short walk brings you to the roadhead, where a vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Pokhara. Enjoy the scenic drive as you bid farewell to the rural villages and return to the peaceful ambiance of Pokhara.

After a leisurely morning in Pokhara, you will catch a flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you have the rest of the day to explore the city, do some last-minute shopping, or simply relax and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the capital.

On your departure day, one of our team members will meet you at your hotel approximately 3 hours before your flight time. He will assist you to the airport for your onward journey. Useful Info

Best Time for Annapurna Sanctuary Trek

The best time for the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek is between the spring months, March to May, and the autumn months, September to November.

Spring weather in this region provides moderate temperatures that range from 10°C to 20°C throughout daytime hours in the lower region.

The trek paths have lush rhododendron flowers accompanied by typical Himalayan peak sights during periods with clear skies.

The seasons between March to May and September to November make this location perfect for those who love nature and want photography.

During autumn in Annapurna, the weather remains steady because the skies are clear and precipitation levels are low.

Trekking can be done easily because of spring-like temperatures during this period. The autumn season draws many travelers because Nepal becomes vibrant with perfect hiking conditions, and festive celebrations like Dashain and Tihar occur during this time.

October through April provides ideal weather conditions for the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek, while June to August remains less favorable because of heavy monsoonal rains creating dangerous trail conditions.

Travelers can attempt the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek during winter months but will encounter difficulties. Trail navigation becomes complex during this season because the temperatures get really low.

How difficult is the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek?

The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek ranks as a moderate difficulty. The trail requires daily walking of 5-7 hours to travel 10-15 kilometers through terrain that includes steep inclines and declines.

The Annapurna Trail leads hikers through various locations, starting from forest sections to rough mountain paths, before reaching high-altitude areas, which present physical challenges.

Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 meters) stands as the highest location on the trek. Yet, it creates a risk of altitude-related problems due to thin atmospheric conditions unless trekkers fulfill proper acclimatization requirements.

New hikers who prepare with proper exercise training can finish the trek successfully.

Annapurna Sanctuary Permits and Fees

You will need two permits for the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek. The first permit is the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), which costs NPR 3,000 only. Then you will also require a TIMS card, which costs NPR 2,000.

A Nepali doesn’t require any permit to trek in Annapurna Sanctuary. One must carry the permits with themselves while traveling.

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek Distance

The Annapurna Sanctuary distance is 110 to 130 kilometers, which equals 68 to 80 miles based on their entry point and chosen path.

The trek lasts seven to twelve days and includes points that require both upward and downward movement and even terrain.

Travelers who join Nayapul or Phedi will find a trek route that guides them along the forest landscapes and small rural communities until they reach Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130m.

Annapurna Sanctuary Weather

Weather in Annapurna Sanctuary shifts according to seasonal changes. Spring temperatures in March through May span from daily 10°C to 20°C while blue skies allow rhododendrons to blossom.

During the autumn months spanning September to November, the region experiences steady climatic conditions that provide superb perspectives of the mountains along with daytime temperatures between 10°C and 15°C.

The winter months (December through February) bring chilly and frosty conditions at elevated elevations, and snow can prevent pathways from being accessible.

The monsoon period from June to August is characterized by heavy rain, which results in slippery paths that reduce trekking enjoyment. Therefore, begin your trek only after verifying the local weather conditions.

Accommodation on the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek

Basic accommodations operate throughout the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek. All accommodations are managed by families who extend friendly hospitality to their guests.

Lower Altitudes (Nayapul to Tikhedhunga)

Travelers can check into basic guesthouses during the initial stages of the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek. Rooms contain only essential furnishings, such as beds, blankets, and minimal tables.

The common dining area serves all meals to guests. Traditional Nepali cuisine includes lentil soup and rice combined with vegetable curry.

Mid-Altitudes (Ghorepani to Deurali)

The higher elevations in the trek feature basic yet comfortable accommodations. At places like Ghorepani, Deurali, and others, the lodges offer clean, warm rooms with mattresses, pillows, and blankets.

Hot shower access might be limited in high-altitude regions because of the freezing weather conditions. Each lodge provides communal area heat with stoves or heaters to keep guests comfortable. Edible meals feature traditional soup options as well as pasta dishes with authentic local food.

High Altitudes (Annapurna Base Camp Area)

Basic accommodations are the standard for visitors who reach elevated altitudes within the Annapurna Base Camp region. Rooms at Machapuchare Base Camp as well as Annapurna Base Camp, rely on basic facilities with options for shared accommodations.

The amenities consist of blankets, so it is best to bring your own sleeping bag. Rooms at these locations maintain minimal size to furnish basic shelter against cold temperatures rather than comfort amenities.

The wireless internet service and charging facilities become increasingly sparse as you climb up to higher elevations. Basic lodges function as places to relax after strenuous trekking days but they offer only the essentials of comfort.

Food and Water During the Annapurna Trek

The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek guarantees abundant food choices, including Nepali and Tibetan food alongside Western dishes, which you can obtain at teahouses throughout the area.

Gourmets on the trek select between dal bhat (rice with lentil soup and vegetables), noodles, pasta, soups, and momo (dumplings) as their preferred dishes.

Porridge as well as pancakes with eggs, are available for breakfast. The simplification of menus at higher elevation points results from the restricted availability of resources.

Bottled water is an option for hydration, but you can also use water purification equipment such as tablets, filters, and UV pens to clean stream and tap water.

Warm beverages, including hot tea coffee, and lemon water, can be easily purchased for keeping warm during the trek.

Altitude and Acclimatization

The trek through Annapurna Sanctuary ends at 4130 meters when reaching Annapurna Base Camp. Few amounts of oxygen remain present in the atmosphere when reaching these high elevations.

This can cause altitude sickness. Headaches together with dizziness and nausea, accompany shortness of breath during the symptom manifestation.

Drinking lots of water combined with proper nutrition will help with the situation. Several trekkers spend additional rest days in locations with less height than base camp.

Annapurna Base Camp Trekkers can take Diamox as a prescribed medicine when required. The best approach for ascent lies in proceeding gradually while paying attention to your physical well-being.

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek Cost

World Alpine Treks sets the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek prices according to the number of participants within the group. Independent trekkers who visit this site need to pay $1,249 for their trip.

Permits, accommodations, meals, and guides are part of the package. Basic transportation services, together with important trekking gear, are included in the package.

The total cost of Annapurna Sanctuary Trek for group trekkers who choose this package amounts to $930 per individual. Reducing expenses becomes possible through group travel because group participants split the bills.

Most package services included within the package offer equivalent benefits. Expenditures for personal use, as well as tips and additional activities, are not included in the price package.

Joining a group for booking purposes enables you to save money on your travel expenses.

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek Guide

You should get a guide to complete the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek. Guides provide both navigation services and maintain your security during the trek.

Guides actively provide important historical and cultural information regarding the region's traditions.

Local guides help their clients manage both altitude sickness and unexpected crisis situations. Personnel who accompany trekkers organize accommodations together with providing meals to ensure a hassle-free trekking experience.

Tourists who choose guides help stimulate local economic growth. The journey turns out better and provides improved knowledge when trekkers choose guided tours.

Flora and Fauna in the Region

The Annapurna Sanctuary contains an extensive variety of plant and animal life. The journey starts in forests dominated by rhododendrons with accompanying oaks. Around this forest region lives the colorful Danphe which serves as Nepal's national bird.

The trail climbs higher through stages that replace vegetation with alpine shrubs and grasses. Visitors walking through the lower parts of the region will spot langurs together with musk deer and Himalayan thar.

Snow leopards exist as extremely uncommon residents in mountain territories but make their homes at high elevations.

The sanctuary offers medicinal plants together with some unique flowers that are difficult to find elsewhere. Climbing through diverse terrain enhances the scenic value of this adventure.

Cultural Experiences (Local Villages and Traditions)

The trekking route travels across villages where Gurung and Magar traditional communities reside.

Various communities within these settlements maintain their own traditions and local practices as well as separate linguistic systems.

Traditional farmland alongside stone-built rural residences can be viewed by trekkers who traverse this area.

Many villagers welcome trekkers with warm hospitality. Traditional Nepali dinners, including dal bhat are available at local lodging areas. Traditional folk music and dancing take place in several villages throughout the region.

Safety Tips and Health Considerations

Planning ahead becomes essential for anyone who desires to visit Annapurna Sanctuary through trekking.

Altitude sickness creates two major symptoms in victims, which consist of multi-layered headaches and distressing vertigo with nausea and breathlessness.

To achieve proper hydration a person requires drinking between three to four liters of water each day.

People should prepare a first-aid box incorporating altitude sickness medication alongside gastrointestinal and pain treatment medications for their journey.

Mountaintop weather exhibits abrupt changes throughout brief time intervals. The reliability of suitable multilayer clothing and water-resistant protective equipment becomes essential during all kinds of mountain travel.

Trekking becomes safer when you join either a guided tour or a group tour, especially for remote locations.

Descent to lower elevation stands as the best remedy to address worsening symptoms of altitude sickness.

Transportation to the Annapurna Trek Starting Point

The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek starts from Nayapul unless Jhinu Danda marks the initial point on the trek according to the itinerary.

The majority of travelers select bus transportation to reach Pokhara. During the 6-to-8-hour journey along the trail, you will see magnificent mountain scenery, including rolling hills and rivers and traditional rural villages.

An additional transportation option for faster access to Pokhara exists through domestic flights that run for 25 minutes between Kathmandu and Pokhara.

From Pokhara, travelers start on a 1.5 to 2-hour drive, which will bring them to Nayapu,l which serves as the main starting point for the trek.

Beyond Pokhara's borders, the road conditions turn rough and remain that way during the monsoon season. Travelling with proper transportation at the beginning of this journey provides a comfortable experience for trekkers.

Guided vs. Independent Trekking Options

During Annapurna Sanctuary Trekkin, visitors have two options: hire a guide or go solo. A guided trek offers expert guidance for directions together with altitude control services and local education about the region.

People who choose independent trekking enjoy increased mobility as well as greater autonomy. When following their own itinerary plan trekkers are free to choose their own walking speed throughout the expedition.

Trekkers are responsible for all aspects related to permits, accommodation and route navigation when choosing an independent trek.

Reaching the Annapurna Base Camp through this more budget-friendly plan demands proper preparation in addition to a trekking experience. Alone trekkers need to watch out for altitude sickness together with sudden weather fluctuations.

Comparison with Other Treks in the Annapurna Region

Among all the route options in the region, the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek gives one of the most striking mountain views. This trek distinguishes itself from the other Annapurna treks in multiple respects.

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is longer than the Annapurna Sanctuary option by crossing over the complete span of Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters above sea level.

Travelers can witness all the diverse natural environments, including subtropical forests and high-altitude deserts. The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek delivers a shorter adventure that places visitors in the central regions of the Annapurna Mountain range.

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek stands as a relatively easy trek that matches perfectly with novice climbers.

The breathtaking sunrise at Poon Hill exists in combination with its sea-level altitude position. Trekkers who choose the Mardi Himal Trek find a less touristy route through an unexplored region of the mountains.

ABC Sanctuary Trek

I recently embarked on the ABC Sanctuary Trek with the World Alpine Trek and had the privilege of being guided by Deepak. I can confidently say that it was an extraordinary experience that exceeded all expectations.

It's so important for me to feel relaxed and relieved not only during the trek but before and after that.
He is very faithful and suave, which gave me such feelings perfectly.
Needless to say, the 2 treks he organized were awesome.

Moreover, I'm glad to know there is a woman who works for this company. I'm hopeful for his company's growth.
I believe a new era has come to this fascinating country and this company will lead that.
Good luck, Shubha Kamana.

Seamless Adventure to Annapurna Base Camp with World Alpine Trek

Our trek to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) with World Alpine Trek was beyond amazing. From the moment we booked, Mr. Rabin provided all the info we needed quickly and clearly, which made us feel at ease right away. Everything was organized perfectly, including backup plans for any hiccups.

Mr. Deepak, our guide, was the true highlight. He was calm, professional, and never rushed us. He encouraged us to walk at our own pace, soak in the views, and reminded us that it was our holiday, so no need to stress! Every day, he would tell us when we’d eat, where we’d sleep, and always had a Plan B ready. It was like he knew our concerns before we even voiced them. Plus, the porters Mr. Amrit and Pramote were incredibly friendly and supportive, keeping us going even when the weather turned.

The accommodations were fantastic. In Kathmandu, the hotel was spacious, comfy, and conveniently close to Thamel. On the trail, the lodges were lovely—often with great views (unless it was raining or foggy!). Definitely bring layers, as the weather can change quickly, and good rain gear is a must!

Despite constant rain toward the end and flight delays, we never felt worried. The team handled everything with such ease that we felt completely carefree.

Lastly, big thanks to Dinesh my last EBC guide for introducing us to World Alpine Trek. His recommendation made all the difference, and I can’t recommend this company enough for a memorable ABC trek!

Thank you to everyone at World Alpine Trek, especially to Mr. Deepak, Dinesh, Amrit, Pramote and all the team members. We are James, New Jacky, and Yo, and we truly appreciate the wonderful experience!
